Oska Zaky (pt 1)
Farm Festival, Features
I remember the night, a cold Halloween evening when Oxjam was still a thing, a young charming lad turned up at The Venue in Wells, full of enthusiasm and clutching a guitar. No expectations, no preconceptions, this lad played some covers before blessing us with some original offerings of his own. I was mesmerised. Almost two years later Oska Zaky is a household name in Somerset. Amongst his many achievements Oska has maintained a humble and welcoming nature which comes as part of his appeal. The list of events he has electrified is endless, Glastonbury Festival, Godney Gathering, and soon to be Farm Fest to name but a few highlights of his short career.
I want to tell you about the Oska I know, the one who greets me with a hug and warm smile every time I see him. The one I witnessed smash his way through three of his own songs at the GFM song writing competition a mere three days after his mentor and dear friend passed away. A young man who managed to play at three separate events in one day whilst still maintaining his enthusiasm and quality. Humble, respectful and hardworking there soon won’t be a day I need to introduce you to him. His music speaks for itself.
He is the ultimate DIY artist. I once sat with Oska as he explained to me at great length how he shot and edited his video for Pieces. Parts in LA, parts at home, all in all a well delivered piece of art. He can speak Chinese by the way … in a culture struggling to speak English … I know impressive. Is there anything he can’t do? I won’t ask his mother, there may be a longer list than he wishes to see which includes the dishes. Anyway let’s move on to more important things.
Oska is at Farm Fest this year after spending a few weeks travelling around China, no doubt an experience we will be hearing a lot about through his music. For those of you who haven’t had the honour of watching him perform then I suggest you head on down to see him in the afternoon. You will be amazed at how advanced he is and how well accomplished his music is. I dare you to prove me wrong.
The future looks set for the stars for Oska Zaky, if he continues to write and provide songs with such quality and heart he will no doubt find himself amongst the greats of the generation. There is more to his story. Keep an eye out as I follow his journey.

Having decided back in Y9 to take Mandarin, Chinese for GCSE I finally got to go to China. I was going last year before my GCSE's but managed to get a featured slot at The Godney Gathering so postponed.
It was a long flight via Abu Dhabi. On arriving in Beijing 16th July it was very hot we got to our hotel lunch then a trip to the Summer Palace, we also met up with other schools on this trip.
During the week we visited Tiananmen Square and through to the Forbidden City, the architecture was stunning! Then to market at Xiushui, lots of haggling to be done. The Great Wall of China was a high light for me 80 percent vertical, I managed to find a guitar & Busked on the Great Wall of China! We went on to the traditional Chinese Markets of Nan Lugu Xiang watching the Fro-Yo flowers raining down on us and our food! Beijing Zoo, was next. I enjoyed the Chinese Tea Ceremony (top tip sit next to a plant throw the 1st cup a way to clean the cup, there was no need to do this was we were given paper cups.) we had 4 types of tea. Then on the the Temple of Heaven, though it was exceedingly hot. The food throughout has been good.
We headed to Harbin City 20th July with a stop to the Hanban HQ the funders of the trip, it was a small museum which we spent 2 hours at, quite interesting. We dropped off our bags after our delayed flight and went straight to the dumpling restaurant, lots of food. Now for going to school Chinese style, I'm in one of the top sets as I have completed 3 years of Chinese, so with the native speakers. I will defiantly be better at Chinese by the end of this week not much English during lesson time.
Today we visited a local village Lanxi and picked fruits & vegetables for dinner.
WOW! Glastonbury for me this year was truly amazing officially there at the Rabbit Hole 3.15 Thursday the place was rocking out and pleased to say my new Song Skin & Bone went down a treat! Best gig! Mixing music with studying has been quite a journey.
Last few ones to go then let the summer begin.
Today was Ben's funeral a beautiful service befitting an amazing friend & teacher as you were to many of us an inspiration.
In the thick of GCSE's and looking forward to playing Glastonbury officially! Yes I can be found on the App and eFestival even with the typo!
A very busy month end of term fast approaching, I've been working with the school band and forming my own band starting in August. I have a list of things that I'm doing, getting around the industry with Emmie, in the studio with Urban, playing gigs. It's all happening here!
On Wednesday this week a teacher got me out of my lesson, I was asked to go with them to the music department. I heard I'm sorry to tell you Oska Mr Kench has passed away...
I could see for my teachers tears that this was an unbelievable reality. He continued to speak but I did not hear his words, my tears welling and I felt suffocated. My Friend, My mentor... GONE
Ben was a very talented singer songwriter, guitarist and teacher, he had been in bands but in 2014 he formed Safehaus a four piece band, I was their first support act. Since then their sound and popularity has risen that they were opening for TopLoader in September!
I feel such great loss as Ben was so passionate about my work, we were going to write a song together he'd help me with songs, chord patterns, so many aspects. In Dec 2013 I'd start to teach myself guitar and Ben gave me lessons in the holidays. As my song writing grew we worked on songs then we worked in the studio recording as well as at home. He just understood what I wanted to achieve. Last November We shared a gig as I launched my 2nd single On A Train, this was a great night.
Last night was the 1st time performing at the Youth Battle of the Bands knowing he'd gone... I was nervous but excited to be playing, it was so hard playing songs he'd worked with me on. I gathered myself and played.
I am still processing this, it's not real but I know it sadly is, he has 4 amazing children. I do not know why... but not without leaving his talent with each of us in it's own special way - Good night Ben, my friend, teacher, mentor thank you for every special moment
YOU HEARD IT HERE 1st....
I'm Playing The Rabbit Hole Emerging Talent Comp on Thursday 3.15pm & The Avalon Cafe Sunday 4.30pm.
I also have some other gigs on site including hospitality for the John Peel Stage and am very excited to be playing again this year!
1 year since the 1st single. Just brought out my 3rd single last month.
So, where are we at? Pilton Party Auditions were brilliant this year to be given another chance. The other bands were very friendly. Great to be playing some of my newer songs. I'm very excited to be working on a bigger sound in the studio. Though I would like a band that will come soon enough for now I'm working on my newer sound and some amazing collaborations, watch this space. My team are working hard with my social media and blown away with over 3k followers on Twitter now. I'm also working on getting my Spotify profile up and Instagram too. So much to do, I'm grateful to my social media team.
I'm woking with an amazing lady whom I hope will co-manage me with my mum.
In amongst this I have been very busy studying for my GCSE's, I keep mentioning this as I feel education is very important and I have been privileged to be given an amazing education here in Somerset with so many opportunities. My grandfather believed in me when things were going very wrong a long time ago, yr1 now in y11 very happy and enjoying all the things that I'm able to do. My school are very understanding and support my music development and they have become more broad in their music concert offerings. A huge thank you to Millfield School and my grandfather.
What's next? in the studio with Urban Monk next Sunday a few gigs, GCSE exams luckily only for 1 month then my favourite time Glastonbury Festival. I have 3 gigs there this year and I hope to be on Worthy FM again too. July I'm in China on a school trip and will be playing to over 500 people with one of my songs I've written in Chinese.
I'm very proud to present this single. It is the new beginning of my music style. I worked very hard on the video using clips that mainly my photographer mother shot whilst in LA last year. The shots came together like the pieces of a puzzle. It was really good to watch it evolve even up to 10pm last night I was making final adjustments before delivering to the public platform. In the 1st 24 hours I have had an overwhelming response from my social media accounts and peers at school. It has helped that I have been doing my Art GCSE final piece that is a very different video the tips and things I have learnt from that have given me the confidence to know what I want.
There are many people to thank, SO THANK YOU ALL for your support and patience. I have met so many amazing people over the last 12 months it has been very special and to know they like what I do is humbling. I am now digging in to my revision 1 more Chinese test, no more Art after Easter then full throttle till 16th June. I have a few limited gigs during this period and my management will be running my social media posts mainly so I can focus on my education. On that note in my music GCSE I'm writing a Nunc Dimittis which is a holy text, I hope to include this in my album release. I'm really enjoying the challenge.
Launch party 13th April 100 Monkeys Glastonbury from 8pm
I finished in the studio last night, checked it over today & it's ready for mastering. Now the video and release 28th March.
I hope to do one more before the summer then start work on the long EP or Album.
I've now invested in gig gear great kit loving my on-line sound desk by Soundcraft. I like that I'm learning so many things within the industry from giging to recording the differences in performance and technical abilities I am learning are incredible. Certainly giving me an insight into the industry and the varied jobs. It was only last week I chose my A-Levels and am considering where after that & I've not even taken my GCSE's yet!
& then your mind gets BLOWN! I'm loving my new style of song writing and it seems others do too.
I'm so lucky to have been given this truly amazing opportunity. In April I will be recording in Camden with URBAN MONK!
Young chap finding his feet, likes the finer things but on a lemonade budget, for now!
